Installing Oracle 10g on Windows 7

When installing the Oracle 10g on Windows 7 I found some problems. So, after fixing them, I decided to share with you my experience.

First, Oracle asks for a network adapter with IP set (but can also use DHCP), so, I decided to install the ms loopback adapter on my notebook (dell inspiron 1525):

I. Install the ms loopback adapter

If your "Add Device" feature is presenting problem, I mean freezing (like mine was), use the Hardware Wizard, from the command prompt:
  1. Click the Start menu.
  2. Search for “cmd".
  3. Right-click on “cmd” and select “Run as Administrator”
  4. Enter “hdwwiz।exe”
  5. In the "Welcome to the Add Hardware Wizard", click Next.
  6. Select "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)" and click Next.
  7. Scroll down and select "Network adapters" and click Next.
  8. Select under Manufacturer "Microsoft" and then under Network Adapter "Microsoft Loopback Adapter" and click Next.

After passing the network test, the OUI refuse to install on Windows 7. Let´s go on...

II. Run the setup using old version of Windows (fake? no, simulation).
If OUI (Oracle Universal Installer), i.e. setup.exe, detects the version and refuse to install on windows 7, run the setup.exe using the feature for downgrade your version detected by OUI:
1. Start > Control Panel > Programs > Use an older program with this version of Windows;
2. Next. Wait for detection of issues...
3. If Oracle is not in the list (I bet it wont be...), choose "Not Listed". Next.
4. Browse to the folder where the Oracle setup.exe is located, click Open, and then... Next, of course.
5. Select the issue "The program worked in eralier versions of Windows but won´t install or run now". Next.
6 . Select your wished version. I used Vista. Next.
7 . A message will appear and then, after the next Next button, the program will start up the setup.exe.

In my case, no one problem was found after this configuration.

If some of the try abort when installing, I advice you to delete the remainig folder from previous (aborted) installation, avoiding unused folders after sucessfull installation. By default, my installer is creating c:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1 folder, but this is changeable in the first screen of OUI.

Hope to help. Good bye.
